Renewable and non-renewable energy sources

Renewable energy sources can be replenished in a short period of time. Most renewable energy goes to producing electricity. The five renewable sources used most often are wind, geothermal, hydropower, and biomass, which include wood and wood waste, municipal solid waste, landfill gas, and biogas, ethanol and biodiesel.

More than 90 percent of the energy consumed in the world comes from non-renewable energy sources, which include uranium ore (nuclear) and fossil fuels — coal, natural gas, and petroleum.

The energy sources used to make electricity can be renewable or non-renewable, but electricity itself is neither renewable nor non-renewable.

Like electricity, hydrogen is a secondary source of energy. It stores and carries energy produced from other resources, including fossil fuels, water, and biomass.
